Technology And Communities

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

A nurse finishing a night shift in Abu Dhabi opens a video call and helps her daughter in Manila with homework she will never see handed in. A patient group scattered across nine countries compares symptoms of a disease so rare that none of them has ever met another sufferer in person. Communities used to be the people you could walk to. Increasingly they are the people you can reach.

This lesson looks at how communications technology holds communities together across borders, at the sharply divided views on what artificial intelligence, bionics and remote healthcare are doing to community life, and at a new class of threats, identity theft, malicious software and attacks on essential services, that arrive from outside a country's jurisdiction and are extremely difficult to answer.

Ebumnobi

  1. The role of communications technology in international community building, using an example of a migrant or diaspora population
  2. New opportunities and threats for communities, including differing views on developments such as artificial intelligence or bionics, healthcare and/or other support services
  3. New and emerging threats to communities across national boundaries, such as identity theft, computer viruses and cyberterrorism

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

For most of history a community was defined by geography: the people close enough to help you, argue with you and turn up at your funeral. Communications technology has loosened that link. A community can now be held together by shared origin, language, faith, illness, occupation or cause rather than by shared ground, and members can be spread across a dozen countries without the community weakening. The change is easiest to see in a diaspora, a population that has spread from an original homeland but retains ties to it and to each other.
