Choosing And Approaching A Global Topic

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Global Perspectives lives or dies on the question you ask. Pick a topic that is too big, like "climate change" or "poverty", and your report drifts into a vague summary that describes everything and proves nothing. Narrow it to a sharp, answerable question, and the same evidence suddenly lets you compare perspectives, weigh arguments and reach a conclusion you can defend. This is the single most important move in the whole course, and the one examiners and moderators reward most.

In this lesson you will learn how to choose a global topic that genuinely interests you, then funnel it down step by step into a researchable report or team-project question. You will practise mapping any issue across the personal, local or national, and global perspectives, finding varied and reliable sources, and spotting the courses of action a topic opens up. Master this and every other topic in the course becomes easier.

Ebumnobi

  1. Choose a global topic and narrow it to a researchable question for the report or team project.
  2. Map an issue across personal, local/national and global perspectives.
  3. Identify good, varied sources and possible courses of action for any topic.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Two of the three Global Perspectives components ask you to choose your own focus. The Individual Report is a 1500 to 2000 word piece of research on a global topic, with a question or title you devise yourself; the Team Project asks your group to plan and act on an issue you choose together. In both, the examiner is not testing whether you can recite facts about migration or the arts. They are testing whether you can frame a question worth asking, research several perspectives on it, reason your way to a judgement and suggest sensible action. A weak question makes all of that harder; a strong, narrow question makes it almost automatic. Choosing and approaching a topic well is therefore the master skill that the rest of the course builds on.
