A Growing Percentage Of The World's Population Lives In Urban Areas

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

In 1975 the world had eight cities of more than ten million people. Today it has more than thirty, and most of them are in Asia. Behind that headline sits the largest migration in human history, still in progress, and it is running at completely different speeds on different continents.

This lesson teaches you to read the urbanisation curve: which countries are on the steep part, which have levelled off, and which are now sending people back out through suburbanisation and counter-urbanisation. You will learn what drives the rate of urbanisation, why megacities emerge where they do, and what goes wrong when a city grows faster than anyone can plan for it.

Ebumnobi

  1. Contrasting trends in urbanisation over the last 50 years in different parts of the world, including the processes of suburbanisation and counter-urbanisation
  2. Factors affecting the rate of urbanisation and the emergence of megacities
  3. Problems associated with rapid urbanisation: congestion, transport, employment, crime and environmental issues

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

More than half the world's people now live in urban areas, and the share is still rising. What makes this examinable is not the global average but the spread around it. A country can be 90 per cent urban and barely changing, or 40 per cent urban and adding a city the size of Manchester every year. Those two situations produce entirely different geographies, and you need to be able to tell them apart from a graph.
