Soil Formation

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Every crop a farmer grows draws its life from a thin skin of soil, yet that soil did not appear overnight. It is the slow product of solid rock being broken down over hundreds or thousands of years by the weather, by water and air, and by living things. Understanding how soil is made helps a farmer see why some land is deep and rich while other land is shallow and stony, and why soil is a resource that must be protected rather than taken for granted.

In this lesson you will learn what parent material is and how the three agents of weathering, physical, chemical and biological, attack it to release the mineral grains that form the skeleton of soil. You will see how plants, animals and humus then turn weathered rock into a living topsoil, and you will be able to explain soil formation in the clear, ordered way that the 0600 exam rewards.

Ebumnobi

  1. (a) explain soil formation from parent material by physical, chemical and biological agents of weathering.

Soil is the farmer's most important resource, and it forms far more slowly than it can be lost. A few centimetres of topsoil may take hundreds of years to build, but careless cultivation can wash it away in a single season. If you understand how soil is made from rock, you understand why it is precious, why deep soils support better crops, and why protecting the topsoil is central to good farming. This is also a favourite area for 0600 examiners, who ask you to NAME the agents of weathering and EXPLAIN how each one works.
