That is the most important fact in this whole specification, and it has a name: the division between hardware and software. This lesson defines both terms precisely enough to survive an exam question, works through the cases people get wrong, and then does the harder and more interesting part: explaining the relationship between the two. You will finish able to classify anything you are shown, to justify the classification rather than assert it, and to explain why the separation is what makes a computer a general purpose machine rather than a very expensive single purpose one.
