The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

In 2015, every member of the United Nations agreed to the same set of 17 goals for the year 2030: end poverty, end hunger, protect the planet, and build peaceful, prosperous societies everywhere. It was the most ambitious shared promise in the UN's history, and more than a decade on, the honest answer to 'how is it going?' is: unevenly, and mostly too slowly.

In this lesson you will trace how the Sustainable Development Goals grew out of earlier UN efforts, unpack why the framework is built the way it is, and look at real, contrasting evidence of progress in different world regions, rather than assuming every goal is either simply 'on track' or simply 'failing'.

Ebumnobi

  1. Prior work of the UN in support of global development, including the 1992 Earth Summit and the Millennium Development Goals (2000)
  2. The 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework and the importance of its different elements for local communities and the global community
  3. Progress made towards meeting SDG targets in two contrasting world regions

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

The Sustainable Development Goals did not appear from nowhere. The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was one of the first major moments when the international community formally linked environmental protection with development, producing agreements on climate and biodiversity and establishing the principle that richer, more industrialised countries bear a greater responsibility for addressing global environmental problems, since they have historically produced the most emissions.
