Programming Concepts

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Every program, however large, is built from a small set of ideas: store a value, get input, produce output, make a choice, repeat something, and break the work into named pieces. Learn these building blocks once and you can read and write programs in any language, because the same concepts hide under different words in Python, Java or pseudocode.

In this lesson you will declare variables and constants, use the core data types, master sequence, selection and iteration, count and total, handle strings, nest statements inside one another, and split a program into procedures and functions with parameters. You will write all of it in the Cambridge pseudocode style used in the exam.

These concepts are the grammar of programming. The exam expects you to read and write algorithms in Cambridge pseudocode, a clear, language-independent style. Master the building blocks here and the programming and algorithm questions become a matter of assembling pieces you already know.
