Discursive And Argumentative Writing

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Section C gives you a blank hour and a choice of three. There is no source text to lean on and no reading to be credited: every one of the 30 marks is for the writing itself. The discursive option is the one most candidates take, partly because it feels like familiar ground, and it is also the one most often written badly, because arguing on paper is a different activity from having an opinion.

This note starts with the choice itself, since picking the wrong one of the three costs more than any technique can recover. Then it separates discursive writing from argument, shows why the for-and-against essay decides nothing, teaches the concession that makes a case stronger rather than weaker, and deals with the problem nobody mentions: what counts as evidence when there are no sources in front of you.

Your paper is three hours long and worth 100 marks. Section A is reading, 40 marks, on two unseen extracts. Section B is question 8, 30 marks, a directed writing task built out of those extracts. Section C is 30 marks and stands entirely on its own: one task chosen from three, discursive, narrative or descriptive, with an hour recommended for it and nothing supplied except the title.
