Prose Fiction Analysis

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Half of the Part 2 anthology is prose, so there is a real chance that the text printed in Section A is not a poem at all but a short story or an extract from a novel. Prose is harder to analyse than poetry for a reason nobody warns you about: it looks like ordinary language. There is no obvious stanza shape to point at, no rhyme to notice, and the writing works by pretending not to be writing.

This note teaches you to see the machinery. You will learn how narrative distance is controlled, how a writer manages what the reader is allowed to know and when, why the pace of a paragraph is a structural choice, and how to write about a prose extract without sliding into retelling the plot, which is the single commonest way to lose marks in this section.

Ebumnobi

  1. Read a variety of prose fiction from a range of genres and cultures
  2. Read substantial pieces of writing (extended texts) that make significant demands in terms of content, structure and the quality of language

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

A poem announces that it has been made. It sits in a shape on the page, the lines stop where the poet decided they should stop, and even a reluctant reader can see that choices were involved. Prose gives you none of that help. Chopin's sentences look like somebody simply telling you what happened in a house one morning, and the reason candidates fall into retelling is that the writing invites them to. Retelling is the trap the form sets.
