Key Concepts

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

A web page you look at is not a file sitting on a computer somewhere waiting to be collected. It is the end of a short assembly line. Something on a distant machine may have built it a fraction of a second ago out of a template and a database query; the browser then decided how it should look; and code running inside the browser is watching for you to click something. Four different things are at work, in two different places, and knowing which is which is the whole of this topic.

This lesson separates them. You will learn that HTML creates the structure of a page while CSS changes its style, why keeping those two apart is worth the trouble, and the difference between server-side scripting, which builds pages before they are sent, and client-side scripting, which adds functionality once they have arrived. That last distinction, where the code runs, decides almost everything else about what each kind of script can and cannot do.

Ebumnobi

  1. Know that web pages can be constructed using HTML and CSS. Know that HTML is used to create the structure of a web page and that CSS can be used to change the style of the page. Understand that server-side scripting languages can be used on a web server for dynamic generation of web pages. Understand that client-side scripting languages can be used to add additional functionality to web pages.

A modern web page is the result of four separate concerns, and the specification names all four. Two of them are about the page itself, and two are about code that runs, one on each of the two machines involved.
