Note-making Under Headings

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Note-making rewards a skill you will use for the rest of your studies: reading a text, deciding what actually matters, and writing it down in a few clear words under the right heading. The exercise gives you the headings; your job is to find the points that belong under each one and record them briefly. It sounds simple, yet candidates lose marks by writing too much, putting a point under the wrong heading, or leaving out the one word that makes a note mean something.

This lesson teaches you to do it cleanly. You will learn to read the heading as a precise instruction, to pick only the points that answer it, to strip a point down to note form without losing the key detail, and to spot the difference between a real point and a repeated example. We model each move on short, realistic texts, contrast a weak set of notes with a strong one, and finish with a full note-making task marked the way an examiner marks it.

Ebumnobi

  1. Select the points in a text that belong under each given heading.
  2. Record each point briefly in note form rather than as full copied sentences.
  3. Distinguish main points from supporting examples and repeated detail.

Exercise 3 of Component 1 is note-making. You read a text and write the relevant points under headings the paper gives you, in note form rather than full sentences. The assessment objective is reading: identifying and selecting the relevant ideas in a text. It is point-marked, with one mark for each acceptable point up to the maximum set for that heading, so a clear, well-placed note is a clean mark and the marks add up fast.
