Decomposition And Abstraction

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

No programmer sits down and writes a large system in one single, unbroken sweep. Every real program, from a school attendance register to a banking app, starts life as a big, messy problem that has to be pulled apart before it can be solved. Two skills make that possible: decomposition, splitting a problem into manageable sub-problems, and abstraction, deciding which details actually matter for solving it.

This lesson works through how to analyse a problem properly before writing any code, how to break it down into sub-problems you can design and test independently, and how to turn a real-world idea, a book, a bank account, a bus timetable, into a simplified abstraction that Python can actually work with.

Ebumnobi

  1. Be able to analyse a problem, investigate requirements (inputs, outputs, processing, initialisation) and design solutions
  2. Be able to decompose a problem into smaller sub-problems
  3. Understand how abstraction can be used effectively to model aspects of the real world
  4. Be able to program abstractions of real-world examples

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Imagine being asked to write, in one attempt, a program that runs an entire school library: it should let students search for books, borrow and return them, track overdue items, and produce reports for staff. Trying to design and code all of that as one single block is unrealistic. It is hard to plan, hard to test, and if something goes wrong, it is hard to work out which part of the program is responsible.

  1. What is decomposition? A) Removing irrelevant detail from a problem B) Splitting a problem into smaller sub-problems C) Testing a program with boundary data D) Converting pseudocode into program code Answer: B
  2. Which of these is an example of abstraction? A) Writing every possible detail about a real object into a program B) Representing a book using only title, author and availability C) Splitting a program into functions D) Testing a function with erroneous data Answer: B
  3. In problem analysis, what does 'initialisation' mean? A) The final output of the program B) Giving a variable a starting value before processing begins C) The list of inputs a program requires D) Removing an unused variable Answer: B
  4. A sub-problem is still too complex to design as a single function. What should happen next? A) The whole program should be abandoned B) The sub-problem should be decomposed further C) All detail about it should be abstracted away D) It should be left as one long function regardless Answer: B
  5. Why is functional (procedural) abstraction useful? A) It lets other code use a function without knowing how it works internally B) It removes the need for a function to have parameters C) It guarantees a program has no errors D) It automatically decomposes a problem Answer: A
