Making

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Once a product has been designed on a computer, the same digital information can drive the machines that cut, shape and build it. Computer-aided manufacture (CAM) is the use of computer-controlled machinery, laser cutters, CNC routers and mills, 3D printers and robot arms, to make products directly from a digital design. The model the designer drew becomes the instructions the machine follows, so what is designed is exactly what is made.

This note examines making with CAM in the resistant-materials context. It sets out the advantages of CAM, such as speed, accuracy, repeatability and the direct link from CAD, and weighs them against the disadvantages, including high cost, the loss of some manual skills and the consequences of a machine repeating a mistake perfectly. The aim is to let you argue clearly about when CAM is the right way to make a product and when it is not.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Computer-aided manufacture is the use of computers to control the machines that make a product. A CAD model is converted into a set of instructions, often called a tool path, that tells the machine exactly how to move. Common CAM machines in resistant-materials work include the laser cutter (which cuts and engraves sheet material with a focused beam), the CNC router and milling machine (which cut away material from wood, plastic or metal with a computer-guided spinning tool), the 3D printer (which builds a part up layer by layer) and robot arms on assembly lines. The defining feature is that the machine follows a digital design rather than a human guiding the tool by hand.

  1. What does CAM stand for? A. Computer-Aided Modelling B. Computer-Aided Manufacture C. Computer-Assisted Measurement D. Computer-Analysed Materials Answer: B
  2. Which is an advantage of using CAM to make products? A. It is always cheaper than hand making for a single one-off B. It produces identical, accurate parts repeatedly and quickly from a CAD design C. It never requires any trained staff D. It cannot make complex shapes Answer: B
  3. Why can a fault in a CAM program be especially costly? A. The machine slows down to avoid the fault B. The machine repeats the same fault perfectly on every part, wasting a whole batch C. CAM machines cannot make mistakes D. The fault only affects the first part made Answer: B
  4. For which job is CAM most clearly the better choice than hand making? A. One simple plywood shelf B. A unique, simple wooden bowl C. 1,000 identical engraved acrylic keyrings D. A single rough garden stake Answer: C
  5. Which is a disadvantage of relying on CAM in a workshop? A. Parts become less accurate than hand making B. A breakdown or power cut can stop all production and waste material C. It is impossible to link CAM to CAD D. CAM can only make one part ever Answer: B
