Evaluating Ideas, Opinions And Viewpoint

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

It is one thing to understand what a writer says; it is another to judge it. Evaluating means weighing a writer's ideas and opinions: asking whether the argument really holds, whether the evidence is strong, where the writer is biased, and how two writers who disagree stack up against each other. This is the skill that separates a competent reader from a critical one, and it is rewarded directly in the highest reading bands of the directed-writing task.

This lesson shows you how to move from listing what the texts say to evaluating it: separating fact from opinion, spotting a writer's viewpoint and bias, and judging how convincing an argument is. You will see a weak, list-everything answer rebuilt into a probing, evaluative one, study an annotated model paragraph that weighs two conflicting views, and practise on a real-style directed-writing task with a model answer and the actual mark-scheme criteria. Learn to question what you read, with evidence, and you unlock the top of the reading mark scheme.

Ebumnobi

  1. Develop, analyse and evaluate facts, ideas and opinions in a text.
  2. Distinguish fact from opinion and detect bias and a writer's viewpoint.
  3. Evaluate how convincing or reliable a writer's argument and evidence are.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Evaluating is reading objective R3: examining, weighing up and building on the facts, ideas and opinions in a text, backed by evidence from it. It is central to two big tasks. In Paper 1 Question 4, the extended response to reading (20 marks: 10 reading + 10 writing), you develop ideas from a text into a new piece of writing, which rewards thoughtful selection and development. In Paper 2 Section A, the directed-writing task, you are told explicitly to 'evaluate the ideas, opinions and attitudes' in the source material (one or two texts). The question comes in two parts: part 1(a) carries 5 reading marks and part 1(b), the directed-writing piece, carries 10 reading marks, so 15 reading marks across the section turn on how well you do it. Examiners are clear that the highest reading marks go to responses that probe and scrutinise ideas rather than list them, so this skill is the single biggest lever on the reading half of that task.
