Listening For Specific Factual Detail

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

The very first thing the Listening paper asks you to do is the simplest to describe and one of the easiest to get wrong: hear one exact fact in a short spoken extract and write it down. A price, a place, a time, an object. The recording will also mention two or three other plausible facts that are not the answer, and weaker candidates reach for those by mistake. This note trains you to lock onto the single detail the question wants and let everything else go past.

You will learn to read the question before the extract plays, to use the question word as a filter, to wait for the answer rather than grabbing the first matching word, and to write the answer so short and so clearly that a marker can read it at a glance. Real examiner feedback shows exactly where marks slip away here, and exactly how to keep them.

Ebumnobi

  1. Identify specific factual detail in short spoken extracts.
  2. Listen for the exact information a question asks for, not nearby detail.
  3. Cope with natural speed, accents and rephrasing in the recording.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Exercise 1 of the Listening paper gives you several short, separate extracts. Each one comes with a question that targets a single piece of factual detail: what time something starts, where a person left something, how many of a thing there were, what someone bought. The recording is played twice. Your job is to retrieve that one fact and write it in a few words. The whole Listening paper carries 40 marks across five exercises, and the recordings are played twice throughout, so you always get a second chance to confirm.
