Constructed Textiles

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Most textile work happens to a cloth that already exists. You buy the fabric, then you dye it, print it or stitch into it. Constructed textiles works the other way round: you build the cloth yourself, from yarn or from loose fibre, and the structure you build is the design. There is nothing laid on the surface, because the surface is the structure.

This note covers weaving, knitting, crochet, felting and the reworking of existing fabric into something new. You will learn how a loom actually makes cloth, why single jersey curls at the edge and rib does not, why felt can be cut in any direction and never frays, and how to plan a set of samples that proves you understood what you were making rather than just that you made it.

Ebumnobi

  1. Develop innovative manipulation and reworking of threads and fabrics
  2. Use a range of constructed textiles materials, tools and techniques such as woven and stitched materials and digital and non-digital processes

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

The specification asks for innovative manipulation and reworking of threads and fabrics, and for a range of constructed textiles materials, tools and techniques including woven and stitched work and both digital and non-digital processes. The word that carries the whole area of study is constructed. A constructed textile is one whose visual and physical character comes from how it was put together, not from anything applied afterwards.
