Dyed Fabrics

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Dyeing is the one textile process where the colour goes inside the material. A print sits on the surface and can crock off; a dyed colour is chemically attached to the fibre itself, so the cloth is coloured all the way through, it stays as flexible as it was, and a translucent cloth stays translucent. That single difference is why some ideas can only be dyed and not printed.

This note treats dyeing as chemistry that a designer controls. You will learn which dye class attaches to which fibre and why, how a natural dye differs from a synthetic one in practice rather than in theory, how an indigo vat can be blue in the air and yellow in the bucket, and how resist methods from shibori, bandhani and batik turn the act of stopping the dye into the design.

Ebumnobi

  1. Use natural and synthetic dyes
  2. Use resist and applied techniques with natural and manmade fibres

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

The specification asks for the use of natural and synthetic dyes, and for resist and applied techniques with natural and manmade fibres. Behind both bullets sits one idea: a dye is a colourant that dissolves and then attaches itself to the molecules of a fibre. It is not a paint and it is not an ink. Nothing is stuck onto the surface, so there is no film, no added stiffness and no layer to rub away.

  1. Which dye class bonds to protein fibres such as wool and silk? A) Reactive B) Acid C) Disperse D) Vat Answer: B
  2. Cloth lifted out of an indigo vat is yellow-green and turns blue in the air because: A) The dye is drying B) Oxygen converts the soluble reduced dye back to its insoluble blue form C) The alkali is evaporating D) Sunlight bleaches the yellow away Answer: B
  3. A mordant is used in natural dyeing in order to: A) Soften the fibre before dyeing B) Bridge chemically between the fibre and the dye so the colour holds C) Remove the natural oils from the plant material D) Raise the temperature of the bath Answer: B
  4. Which resist method could NOT be used with a hot dye bath? A) Stitched resist B) Clamped and folded resist C) Wax batik D) Bound and tied resist Answer: C
  5. In ikat, the resist is applied to: A) The finished cloth, before immersion B) The yarn, before it is woven C) The loom, before warping D) The dye bath itself Answer: B
