Spelling And Grammar Accuracy

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

You can have brilliant ideas and a vivid imagination and still lose marks for the smallest things: a verb that does not match its subject, a story that slides from past to present and back, an apostrophe in the wrong place. Accuracy is not a side issue in First Language English. It is assessed directly, it runs through every band of every writing mark scheme, and it is the difference that quietly separates a good script from a top one.

This lesson is a practical accuracy clinic. Instead of listing rules in the abstract, it shows you the handful of error patterns that cost the most marks and trains you to spot and fix them. You will work through agreement, tense consistency, the homophones that trip up even strong writers, apostrophes, and the words people most often misspell, always with a wrong version set beside the corrected one so the fix is unmistakable.

Ebumnobi

  1. Demonstrate accuracy in spelling and grammar.
  2. Use standard English grammar, including tense, agreement and sentence construction, consistently.
  3. Recognise and correct the errors most commonly penalised in exams.

Writing objective W5 rewards accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar, and it is woven into the writing bands of both Paper 1 and Paper 2. In the Paper 2 composition, up to 24 of the 40 marks are for style and accuracy, so grammar and spelling are not a polite extra: they are more than half the mark for that question. The top writing bands describe spelling, punctuation and grammar that are 'almost always accurate', while the middle and lower bands describe 'minor, but more frequent' errors and then 'frequent errors' that begin to impede communication. In other words, the same idea can sit two whole bands apart depending only on how cleanly it is written.
