Understanding Modern Prose Texts

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

The modern prose question is the largest single answer you will write on the poetry and prose paper, and it is the one where the book is not in front of you. Everything you use has to come out of your own head: the moment, the detail, the phrase, the chapter it sits in. That is why examiners talk about close knowledge rather than knowledge. Recognising a novel is not the same as being able to reach into it.

This note builds the three things the objective actually asks for. Knowledge you can move around in, taken from Of Mice and Men, The Joy Luck Club and Western Lane. A critical style, which is a way of writing that treats the novelist as someone making decisions. And informed personal engagement, which is a judgement you own and defend, not an announcement that you enjoyed the book.

Ebumnobi

  1. Demonstrate a close knowledge and understanding of a modern prose text
  2. Maintain a critical style and present an informed personal engagement
  3. Identify and use relevant examples from the prose text

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Ask two candidates what happens in the fourth chapter of Of Mice and Men and both will say that Lennie goes into Crooks's room. Ask what is in the room and only one will answer: a shelf of medicine bottles and harness dressing, a battered dictionary, a mauled copy of the California civil code. That candidate can write about how Steinbeck builds a man who has been given books instead of company. The other can only write that Crooks is lonely.
