Reproduction In Plants

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Every maize cob and every pod of beans began as a flower. Plants make the next generation in two very different ways. In sexual reproduction a flower brings male and female cells together to make seeds, mixing the qualities of two parents. In asexual reproduction a single plant grows a whole new plant from a piece of itself, a tuber or a cutting, with no seeds and no mixing at all. A farmer uses both: seeds to grow a maize field, cuttings to multiply a prized cassava.

In this lesson you will compare the wind-pollinated flower of maize with the insect-pollinated flower of a bean, follow pollen to the egg in fertilisation, and see how seeds and fruits are spread so that new plants are not crowded together. You will also learn why scattered weed seeds are so hard to control, and how planting tubers and cuttings lets a farmer copy a good plant exactly.

Ebumnobi

  1. (a) define the term sexual reproduction.
  2. (b) describe the structure and functions of the flowers of a maize plant and of a bean plant.
  3. (c) define the term pollination.
  4. (d) describe the process of fertilisation in a named plant.
  5. (e) describe how seeds and fruits are dispersed and explain the importance of dispersal in relation to weed control.
  6. (f) describe asexual reproduction from stem tubers (e.g. Irish potato and yam) and from stem cuttings (e.g. sweet potato, cassava and sugar cane).

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Reproduction is where a crop comes from and where the next crop is planned. Knowing how a flower is pollinated tells a farmer whether bees or wind will set the seed; knowing how seeds are dispersed explains why weeds keep coming back across a whole field; and knowing how tubers and cuttings work lets a farmer multiply an exact copy of a high-yielding plant. These ideas run straight into practical decisions about planting material, spacing and weed control.
