Writing Speeches And Letters

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

A speech and a letter have almost nothing in common on the page and one enormous thing in common underneath it: both are addressed. Somebody specific is on the other end, either sitting in front of you in a hall or opening an envelope at a desk, and that person's presence should be detectable in every paragraph. Writing that forgets who it is talking to is the single most reliable way to lose marks on the heaviest objective in this qualification.

This note treats the two forms as the pair they are. You will learn how to write for the ear, which cannot go back and re-read; how the pronouns I, you and we function as an engine rather than as decoration; how a letter's conventions signal competence in about fifteen seconds; and why controlled displeasure in a complaint gets what anger never will.

Ebumnobi

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Most writing is aimed at a reader who is imagined. A speech and a letter are aimed at a reader who is real, present and identified. The governors are in the hall. The council officer's name is at the top of the page. Everything that distinguishes these two forms from an essay follows from that one fact, and so does everything the examiner is looking for.
