Sculpture

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

A fine art sculpture has no job to do. Nobody sits on it, nobody drinks from it, no client signed off a brief and no user was consulted. It is an object made to be looked at, walked around and thought about, and everything it communicates it communicates through material, mass, surface and the space it takes up in a room you are also standing in. That absence of function is not a limitation. It is the reason a sculpture can be about grief, or weight, or absence, when a chair can only ever be about sitting.

This note covers the four ways of making form, which are carving away, modelling up, constructing and joining, and casting, and it covers what actually decides whether a piece stands up: armatures, gravity, shrinkage and joints. It then covers the two things sculptors think about that no other area of study requires, which are the void and the viewer's body. It finishes with the photography, because sculpture is submitted as photographs and those photographs are assessed as part of your work.

Ebumnobi

  1. Create form through manipulation of three-dimensional materials to communicate ideas
  2. Use a range of sculpting materials, tools and techniques such as carving, modelling, joining, constructing and reducing, and transposing two-dimensional images into three-dimensional forms

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Start with the distinction, because it decides everything that follows. A three-dimensional designer works from a brief: there is a site, a user, a function and a set of constraints, and the finished object is judged partly on whether it works. A fine art sculptor has none of that. There is an intention, a material and a space, and the object is judged on what it does to the person standing in front of it. The same block of plaster can become either, and the difference is not the material or the technique but the question the maker is answering.

  1. What is the main purpose of an armature inside a modelled clay figure? A) To make the piece lighter B) To carry the tensile load that clay cannot, especially in projecting parts C) To help the clay dry faster D) To give the surface a texture Answer: B
  2. Why can a clay figure built on a metal armature not normally be fired? A) The metal melts at low temperature B) The clay shrinks as it dries and fires while the metal does not, so the piece bursts C) Kilns cannot accommodate armatures D) The metal discolours the clay Answer: B
  3. Which process makes a solid object in the shape of an empty space? A) Direct carving B) Modelling over an armature C) Casting the negative space D) Welded construction Answer: C
  4. A rectangular frame of four canes with flexible corners collapses sideways. What is the correct structural fix? A) Use thicker canes B) Add a diagonal to triangulate it C) Make the frame taller D) Cover it with cloth Answer: B
  5. How must work submitted for sculpture be documented for assessment? A) One black and white photograph B) In colour, at a size such as A4, normally four angles, mounted on an A2 sheet C) A written description of the piece D) A scale drawing only Answer: B
