Styles

Akopọ

Think of a famous brand. You can probably picture its colours and lettering before you can read its name. That instant recognition is no accident: it comes from a house style applied consistently to everything the company produces. In documents, the tool that delivers that consistency is the style: a named bundle of formatting you define once and apply everywhere, so every heading and every paragraph matches without being formatted by hand.

In this lesson you will learn how to define, apply, modify and update consistent styles covering the font face and type (serif or sans-serif), point size and colour, text alignment, text enhancement, and spacing and bullets. You will also learn what a corporate house style is and why organisations use one, so that the styles you create match a given specification exactly, which is what the practical papers reward.

Styles tasks test two things at once: whether you can format text correctly, and whether you can make that formatting consistent across a whole document by defining and reusing a style rather than formatting paragraph by paragraph. The exam often gives you a table of styles to create and apply exactly. Marks go to the candidate whose headings, subheadings and body text all match the specification and each other, so understanding what a style is, and how to build one, protects marks throughout document production.
