Technology, Energy And Climate Change

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Every serious plan for limiting climate change is, in the end, a list of machines. Insulation and heat pumps in buildings, solar panels and turbines on the grid, batteries to hold the electricity until the evening, barriers to hold back the sea when the weather wins anyway. The politics decides how fast they are built; the engineering decides whether they work at all.

This lesson looks at three families of technology: the ones that let us use less energy, the ones that let us generate energy without burning fossil fuels, and the ones designed to cope with the warming that is already unavoidable. For each you will weigh the genuine advance against the local cost, because almost every one of these technologies is welcomed in the abstract and argued over on the site where it is actually built.

Ebumnobi

  1. Energy-saving technologies developed in response to climate change, such as energy-efficient appliances, buildings and towns
  2. New energy technology developed as an alternative to fossil fuels, including solar, wind and nuclear power sources, and the associated local issues
  3. Technologies needed to tackle or adapt to future climate change, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS) and flood barriers

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

The cheapest unit of energy is the one never used, so the first family of climate technology is not about generating power at all. It is about needing less of it for the same result. This is called energy efficiency, and it operates at three scales: the appliance, the building, and the settlement.
