Why Was There Stalemate On The Western Front?

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

In August 1914 both sides expected a short, fast-moving war that would be over by Christmas. Germany even had a detailed plan, the Schlieffen Plan, designed to knock France out in six weeks. Yet by the end of the year the armies had dug two lines of trenches that snaked from the Belgian coast to the Swiss border, and neither side could move. For nearly four years men lived, fought and died in this narrow strip of mud. How did a war of movement turn into a deadlock that swallowed a generation?

This lesson explains why the Schlieffen Plan failed, how a defensive war of trenches took hold by the end of 1914, and what it was like to live and fight there. It weighs up the new weapons that made attacking so deadly and looks at the two great battles of 1916, Verdun and the Somme, that came to stand for the whole grim logic of attrition. By the end you will be able to argue, not just describe, why the Western Front became stuck.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Understanding the stalemate is the key that unlocks the whole of the First World War depth study. Almost every later development, the new weapons, the appalling casualty lists, the strain on civilians at home and the eventual collapse of Germany, flows from one fact: on the Western Front, defence was far stronger than attack. Cambridge examiners reward answers that can explain the causes of the deadlock and weigh their relative importance, not answers that simply tell the story of 1914. So the aim here is to think like a historian about cause, consequence and balance.
