Drawing Techniques

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Drawing is the designer's main language. Before a product can be made, discussed or sold, it has to be drawn, and the type of drawing chosen depends on the job it must do. A quick freehand sketch explores an idea in seconds; a precise orthographic drawing tells a maker exactly how big every part is; an exploded view shows how the pieces fit together. Choosing the right drawing technique, and producing it cleanly, is a core skill of design and technology.

This note covers the 0445 drawing-technique objectives: using freehand sketching and annotation to communicate ideas; understanding orthographic, isometric, exploded drawings and developments (nets); using flowcharts, Gantt charts and materials lists to plan making; and knowing where computer-aided design (CAD) adds value. Each technique is explained with concrete examples so you know not just how to draw it but when to reach for it.

Ebumnobi

  1. use freehand sketching and annotations to communicate design ideas
  2. understand the use of orthographic, isometric, exploded drawings and developments (nets)
  3. understand the use of flowcharts, Gantt charts and materials lists in planning for making
  4. understand the use of computer-aided design (CAD) where appropriate.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Freehand sketching is fast, loose drawing done without instruments. Its job is to get ideas out of your head and onto paper quickly so they can be seen, compared and developed. In the early stages of designing, quantity matters more than polish: a page of rough thumbnail sketches showing many different approaches is worth more than one carefully ruled drawing of a single idea, because it shows a designer exploring options rather than committing too early.
