Radioactivity (continued 2)

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

The same radiation that lets doctors image a tumour or sterilise equipment can also damage living cells if it is not handled with care. Ionising radiation knocks electrons from atoms inside the body, harming cells, so working safely with radioactive sources is as important as knowing what they can do.

In this lesson you will state the effects of ionising nuclear radiation on living things, describe how radioactive materials are moved, used and stored safely, and explain the three core safety precautions: reducing the time of exposure, increasing the distance from the source, and using shielding to absorb the radiation.

Ebumnobi

  1. State the effects of ionising nuclear radiations on living things, including cell death, mutations and cancer
  2. Describe how radioactive materials are moved, used and stored in a safe way
  3. [Supplement] Explain safety precautions for all ionising radiation in terms of reducing exposure time, increasing distance between source and living tissue and using shielding to absorb radiation

Akwụkwọ Ọmụmụ

Radioactive sources are used in hospitals, industry and research, and everyone who works with them, from radiographers to nuclear engineers, depends on a few clear safety rules to stay protected. Exam questions ask you to state the biological effects and to justify each precaution, so precise wording matters.
