The mains supply that powers your home is useful and dangerous in equal measure. A frayed cable, a damp room or an overloaded socket can cause a shock or a fire, so every house and appliance is built with layers of protection you may never notice.
In this lesson you will learn the hazards of mains electricity and the safety features that guard against them: the three wires of a mains circuit, why the switch and fuse go in the live wire, how fuses and trip switches work, and why appliances are earthed or double-insulated.

Electricity has two hazards. A thermal hazard occurs when there is electrical overheating. A shock hazard occurs when electric current passes through a person. Both hazards have already been discussed. Here we will concentrate on systems and devices that prevent electrical hazards. Figure 23.31 show

There are two known hazards of electricity—thermal and shock. A thermal hazard is one where excessive electric power causes undesired thermal effects, such as starting a fire in the wall of a house. A shock hazard occurs when electric current passes through a person. Shocks range in severity from pa
