Designing (Materials option)

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

The drawing board and the set square have largely given way to the screen. Modern designers develop products using computer-aided design (CAD): software that lets them model an object in three dimensions, test it, change it in seconds and send it straight to a machine that will make it. More recently, artificial intelligence has begun to assist the design process itself, generating options and predicting how a product will perform. Both reshape what a designer can do, and both carry risks worth understanding.

This note examines designing with digital tools. It sets out the advantages and disadvantages of using CAD to design resistant-materials products, from accurate 3D modelling and easy editing to the cost and training they demand. It then weighs the benefits and risks of using artificial intelligence in product design, helping you argue both sides of a debate that is moving fast in the real world.

Akwụkwọ Ọmụmụ

Computer-aided design is the use of software to create, modify and refine the design of a product on a computer. For resistant-materials work the designer builds a three-dimensional virtual model of the object, which can be rotated, viewed from any angle, measured, dimensioned and changed at will. The same model can be tested by simulation, presented to a client as a realistic rendering, and exported directly to manufacturing machines. CAD replaces much of the slow, manual work of drawing every view by hand and redrawing it whenever the design changes.

  2. Which is an advantage of using CAD to design a product? A. It never requires any training B. A design change updates the whole 3D model automatically, making editing fast C. It removes the need to ever test the product D. It is always cheaper than drawing by hand Answer: B
  3. Which of the following is a disadvantage of CAD? A. Designs cannot be shared with manufacturers B. The software and hardware are expensive and need training to use C. Dimensions become less accurate than hand drawing D. Models cannot be viewed in three dimensions Answer: B
  4. What is a key benefit of using AI generative design for a component? A. It removes the need for any human to check the design B. It can optimise a shape to use the least material for a required strength C. It guarantees the design is original and owned by the user D. It works without any data Answer: B
  5. Why must a designer always evaluate a design produced by an AI tool? A. AI is always slower than a human B. AI cannot produce 3D shapes C. AI can produce confident results that are unsafe or impossible to manufacture, as it lacks real understanding D. AI designs are illegal to use Answer: C
