It is easy to picture the First World War as a line of trenches in France and Belgium. Yet men from every inhabited continent fought in it, campaigns were waged in Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific, and the navies of several nations clashed across the oceans. Soldiers from India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and Africa served far from home, while Japan and the Arab forces of the revolt opened fronts of their own.
