Akọwa Nkọwa

In Isidore Okpewho's The Last Duty, Aku, the wife of the detained Oshevire, can rightly be seen as a tragic character. Set during the Nigerian Civil War, the novel places her in an impossible situation in which loyalty, survival and the pressures of war combine to destroy her peace and reputation.

Her situation invites tragedy

• Aku is left alone and vulnerable when her husband, Oshevire, is imprisoned on a false accusation of collaborating with the enemy. As a member of the minority Igabo group in Urukpe, she is exposed and defenceless.
• She must struggle to protect her young son, Oghenevwoke, and to keep the family together in a hostile, war-torn town.

The forces that trap her

• Toga Ekeh Medozor's / Toje's exploitation. The wealthy Toje uses his position to prey on her, offering "protection" and material help while pursuing her sexually, turning her dependence into a trap.
• Betrayal and manipulation. Toje's impotence and the involvement of the soldier Ali complicate her plight, and she is drawn into a relationship that ruins her name though it springs from vulnerability, not desire.
• Loss of dignity. Her fidelity and honour are compromised by circumstances beyond her control, and the community's suspicion isolates her further.

The tragic outcome

• Despite her efforts to remain loyal to her imprisoned husband, Aku loses her innocence, her reputation and ultimately her stable place in the world.
• The novel's grim conclusion, with the family's destruction, seals the sense of waste and suffering that defines tragedy.

A balanced view

• Aku is not flawless, and some of her choices deepen her ruin, which fits the tragic pattern of a sympathetic figure partly undone by circumstance and partly by human weakness.
• Yet her suffering is disproportionate to any fault, and she is more victim than agent, caught in the machinery of war and male exploitation.

Conclusion. Aku is a tragic character because a decent woman, striving to protect her family and remain faithful, is crushed by war, poverty and the predatory power of men. Her downfall arouses the pity and waste that mark true tragedy.

Akọwa Nkọwa

In Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood, Nnu Ego moves from rural Ibuza to the harsh, money-driven world of colonial Lagos. Mama Abby, though a minor character, plays an important part in helping Nnu Ego endure the hardships of city life.

Who Mama Abby is

• Mama Abby is a neighbour and fellow woman in Lagos, mother of Abby. She belongs to the small community of struggling city dwellers around Nnu Ego.

Her importance to Nnu Ego's survival

• A source of comfort and companionship. In a cold, impersonal city far from the support of her Ibuza kin, Mama Abby offers Nnu Ego friendship and a listening ear, easing her loneliness and emotional strain.
• Practical help in crisis. She stands by Nnu Ego during moments of difficulty, offering advice and neighbourly assistance when Nnu Ego struggles to feed and raise her many children on Nnaife's meagre income.
• A model of urban adaptation. Mama Abby is more exposed to city ways and helps Nnu Ego understand and cope with the demands of Lagos life, where survival depends on money rather than communal farming.
• Support in family troubles. When Nnaife is imprisoned and the family faces hardship, the solidarity of women like Mama Abby helps Nnu Ego hold the household together.

Qualifying the claim

• Nnu Ego's survival rests chiefly on her own resilience, petty trading and sacrificial devotion to her children. Mama Abby supports rather than replaces this effort.
• The novel stresses that even such friendships cannot spare Nnu Ego her ultimate loneliness, so Mama Abby's help, while real, has limits.

Conclusion. Mama Abby is important as a friend, adviser and fellow survivor who softens the cruelty of Lagos for Nnu Ego. She embodies the female solidarity that sustains women in a hostile city, even though Nnu Ego's endurance remains, finally, her own.

Akọwa Nkọwa

Isidore Okpewho's The Last Duty is set against the background of the Nigerian Civil War, and the horrors of war run through the entire novel. Rather than describing battlefields, Okpewho shows how war corrupts a small community, Urukpe, and destroys the lives of ordinary people caught in its grip.

False accusation and unjust detention

• Oshevire is imprisoned on a trumped-up charge of aiding the enemy, simply because he belongs to a minority group. War creates an atmosphere of suspicion in which innocence offers no protection.

Exploitation and moral collapse

• Personal greed and rivalry masquerade as patriotism; Toje's true motive in destroying Oshevire is business jealousy, not loyalty to the state.

Ethnic hatred and division

• The conflict inflames ethnic suspicion between the majority community and the minority Igabo people. Neighbours turn on neighbours, and belonging to the "wrong" group becomes dangerous.
• This mirrors the wider tragedy of the civil war, where communal identity became a matter of life and death.

Suffering of the innocent

• Aku and her young son endure poverty, fear, isolation and shame. The child's confusion and hunger dramatise how war victimises the most helpless.
• The breakdown of the family and the destructive violence at the end show the human cost of the conflict.

Physical and psychological damage

• Characters bear scars of body and mind. Toje's impotence, Oshevire's imprisonment and the general climate of fear reveal how war maims people inwardly as well as outwardly.

Conclusion. Okpewho presents war not as heroic combat but as a corrupting force that ruins innocent lives, unleashes greed and ethnic hatred, and destroys families. Through the fate of Oshevire, Aku and their community, the novel becomes a powerful condemnation of the horrors and futility of war.

Akọwa Nkọwa

Richard Wright's Black Boy is an autobiographical account of the author's harsh childhood and youth in the American South. The relationship between Richard and members of his family is generally strained, marked by hunger, misunderstanding, violence and religious conflict, and this troubled family life shapes his rebellious, independent character.

Richard and his father

• His father, Nathaniel, is distant and later abandons the family, leaving them in poverty and hunger. Richard grows to despise him, seeing him as irresponsible.
• Years later Richard finds his father a broken sharecropper and feels a mixture of pity and estrangement, recognising how far apart their lives have grown.

Richard and his mother

• His mother, Ella, is the figure he loves most, yet her chronic illness and paralysis fill him with helpless grief. Her suffering comes to symbolise for him the suffering of all Black people.
• Her hardships force Richard into early responsibility and deepen his sense of life's cruelty.

Richard and his grandmother and relatives

• His fiercely religious grandmother, Granny, clashes constantly with Richard, who rejects her rigid faith. Their conflict over religion causes bitter tension in the home.
• Uncle Tom tries to discipline him harshly, and Richard defies him, showing his refusal to submit to authority he considers unjust.
• Aunt Addie, his teacher and relative, beats him and treats him cruelly, deepening his alienation from the family.

The nature of the relationship

• Hunger, poverty and violence dominate the household, and Richard is often beaten and misunderstood.
• His hunger for books, knowledge and independence sets him against a family that values obedience and religion, so he becomes increasingly isolated within his own home.

Conclusion. Richard's relationship with his family is largely one of conflict and alienation, softened only by his tender, sorrowful love for his suffering mother. The coldness, violence and religious rigidity he meets at home drive him toward self-reliance and eventual flight to the North, making his family experience central to his development.

Akọwa Nkọwa

Gender discrimination is a central theme in Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood. Through the life of Nnu Ego, the novel exposes how patriarchal Igbo and colonial society values men above women and reduces a woman's worth to her ability to bear, especially male, children.

The preference for male children

• A woman's status depends on producing sons. Nnu Ego is honoured when she bears boys and devalued when she has daughters. Her daughters' education is sacrificed so that the sons can be schooled.
• The bitter irony of the title is that the "joys of motherhood" bring Nnu Ego endless toil, for she is expected to sacrifice everything for children, especially sons, who ultimately fail to reward her.

Women as property and childbearers

• Nnu Ego's value in her first marriage collapses because she is thought barren; a childless wife is treated as worthless and returnable.
• Women are inherited like property. On Nnaife's brother's death, Nnaife inherits his wives, showing that women pass between men as possessions.
• Bride price and marriage arrangements treat women as goods to be transferred between families.

Unequal burdens between husband and wife

• Nnu Ego bears the crushing labour of feeding and raising the family through petty trading, while Nnaife contributes little and even squanders resources. The double standard is stark.
• Men enjoy freedom, leisure and the right to take more wives, while women are bound to endless domestic sacrifice.

Polygamy and male privilege

• Nnaife takes a second wife, Adaku, and the co-wives are set in rivalry, another sign of a system that serves male interest at women's expense.
• Adaku's eventual decision to leave and trade independently is one of the few acts of protest against this discrimination.

Conclusion. Emecheta indicts a society in which a woman is valued only as a bearer of sons and a servant of men. Nnu Ego's lonely, unrewarded death dramatises the cruelty of gender discrimination, and the novel becomes a powerful protest against the injustice done to women.

Akọwa Nkọwa

Racism is the dominant theme of Richard Wright's Black Boy. The autobiography records how a Black child growing up in the American South is shaped, threatened and almost broken by a society built on white supremacy and racial oppression.

The daily reality of segregation

• Richard grows up in a South where Blacks and whites are rigidly separated. He learns early that there are places he cannot go, jobs he cannot hold and words he cannot say to white people.
• He must master a humiliating code of behaviour, showing deference and hiding his intelligence, simply to stay safe among whites.

Violence and fear

• Racial violence hangs over Black life. Richard hears of the killing of a relative (his uncle Hoskins) by whites who covet his business, teaching him that a Black man's life and property are never secure.
• Lynching and the constant threat of white aggression fill the atmosphere with fear, forcing Blacks to live cautiously and submissively.

Economic oppression

• Racism keeps Black families in poverty. Richard endures hunger and menial, poorly paid jobs, and white employers exploit and cheat Black workers with impunity.
• His attempts to better himself are repeatedly blocked by whites who resent an ambitious Black youth.

The psychological damage

• Racism warps relationships and the spirit. It breeds fear, self-suppression and even hostility among Blacks themselves, who urge Richard to accept his "place."
• Richard's hunger for books and knowledge is dangerous in a world that wants Blacks ignorant; he must borrow a white man's library card by deceit to read at all.

Richard's response

• Rather than accept degradation, Richard rebels inwardly and clings to his individuality and love of learning.
• His decision to flee to the North is his final protest against a system that denies his humanity.

Conclusion. Through his own experiences, Wright exposes racism as a pervasive evil that starves, terrorises and dehumanises Black people. Black Boy is both a personal story and a searing indictment of racial injustice in America.
