Understanding Modern Drama Texts

Bayani Gaba-gaba

You are allowed your copy of the play in the drama examination. That sounds like a gift, and it is one of the most reliable ways to lose marks. Candidates who do not know the play spend twelve minutes flicking through it, find something roughly relevant, quote it at length, and produce an essay that is mostly other people's words. Candidates who do know the play open it twice, land on the exact line they had already planned to use, and spend the rest of the time thinking.

This note is about the knowledge that makes an open book useful: the shape of a play in your head, the arc of each character, the moments that turn it, and the habit of writing about all of it in a critical voice that sounds like a reader with a view rather than a reader with a summary.

Manufura

  1. Demonstrate a close knowledge and understanding of a modern drama text
  2. Maintain a critical style and present an informed personal engagement
  3. Identify and use relevant examples from the play

Takardar Darasi

Close knowledge of a play is not the ability to retell it. It is a working map. If somebody names any moment in your set text, you should be able to say, quickly: where in the play it falls, what each character wants at that point, what the audience knows that the characters do not, and what has changed by the time the scene ends. That last question is the one weak candidates never ask. A scene that changes nothing is rare in a well made play, and identifying the change is usually the fastest route to something worth saying.
