Poverty And Inequality

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Two facts can both be true at once: the world has never been richer, and hundreds of millions of people still cannot meet their basic needs. Poverty is about not having enough; inequality is about the size of the gap between those who have most and those who have least. The two are linked but not the same, and keeping them apart is one of the first skills this topic teaches. In Global Perspectives you are not asked to memorise statistics for their own sake; you are asked to weigh how the issue looks to a person, to a country and to the whole world, to test the evidence on each side, and to reason toward fair, workable action.

This note shows you how. You will meet the core facts stated with their sources and years, the difference between absolute and relative poverty and between gaps within and between countries, the three perspectives set side by side, the big debates laid out as argument and counter-argument so you stay balanced, and report and team-project ideas you could really use. The worked examples model the skills the exam rewards: spotting a perspective, evaluating a claim, framing a sharp question and building a line of reasoning.

Manufura

  1. Explain why poverty and inequality is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on poverty and inequality, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to poverty and inequality, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on poverty and inequality, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Takardar Darasi

Poverty and inequality matter to Global Perspectives because they shape almost everything else: health, education, conflict, migration and trust between people. They are global because the gaps run both within countries (between rich and poor citizens of the same nation) and between countries (between rich and poor nations), and because in a connected world wealth and hardship in one place ripple out to others. Ending poverty is the very first of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and reducing inequality is the tenth, which signals how central the issue is to the whole world.
