Mechanisms

Bayani Gaba-gaba

A mechanism is any arrangement of parts that takes one kind of effort and turns it into a useful movement somewhere else. The brake lever on a bicycle, the gears inside a hand whisk, the chain on a chainsaw and the windscreen wiper on a car are all mechanisms. They let a small, convenient input produce a larger force, a faster motion, or movement in a more useful direction. For a designer, understanding mechanisms is the difference between a product that merely looks right and one that actually works.

This note builds the toolkit you need for the 0445 mechanisms objectives: the three classes of lever and the linkages built from them; gears, pulleys, belts, sprockets and chains; the four named types of motion and how mechanisms convert one into another; why friction must be reduced and how lubrication does it; and how the same simple devices let you trade force against distance or redirect a movement entirely. Every idea is worked through with concrete numbers so you can apply it in the exam and on the bench.

Manufura

  1. identify and sketch simple examples of first-, second- and third-class levers, and associated linkages
  2. show knowledge of gears, pulleys and belts, sprockets, and chain drives for practical applications
  3. recognise the need to reduce friction between two surfaces by design, and describe the types of lubrication
  4. recognise and give examples of the following types of motion: - rotary - linear - reciprocating - oscillating
  5. identify examples of the conversion of motion
  6. understand how mechanisms can be used to change direction or force of motion.

Takardar Darasi

Almost nothing a person wants to do matches the movement a power source naturally produces. A motor spins, but a sewing machine needs an up-and-down stab of the needle. Your hand can squeeze gently, but a pair of bolt cutters needs to crush hardened steel. A mechanism is the bridge between the available input and the required output. It can multiply force, multiply speed, change the direction of a movement, or convert one type of motion into another. Because energy is conserved, a mechanism never gives you something for nothing: if it multiplies force it costs you distance, and if it multiplies speed it costs you force. The skill of the designer is choosing the trade that suits the job.
