The Global Perspectives Critical Path

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Global Perspectives is not a subject you revise by memorising facts. There is no syllabus of dates, formulae or definitions to learn by heart. Instead you are taught a way of thinking: how to research a real global issue, weigh the evidence, listen fairly to people who see it differently, build a reasoned argument and reflect honestly on what you have learned. Cambridge calls this set of skills the Critical Path, and it is the spine that runs through the whole course.

This opening lesson gives you the map of the course. You will see what each Critical Path skill is and how the skills connect, why every issue is examined from three perspectives (personal, local or national, and global), and exactly how the three assessment components, the Written Exam, the Individual Report and the Team Project, reward those skills. Get this map clear now and every later lesson will make more sense.

Manufura

  1. Describe what Global Perspectives is and how its skills (research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, communication, collaboration) fit together as the Critical Path.
  2. Explain how an issue is examined from personal, local/national and global perspectives.
  3. Outline how the three assessment components reward these skills.

Takardar Darasi

Most school subjects ask you to learn a body of knowledge and then show it in an exam. Global Perspectives is different. The Cambridge 0457 syllabus states plainly that knowledge of content is not assessed: the topics are simply the arena in which your skills are tested. That changes how you should study. You are not collecting facts about migration or climate change to repeat them back; you are learning to investigate any complex issue, judge what the evidence really shows, understand why reasonable people disagree, and argue a case you can defend. Those are the skills universities and employers value, and they are the skills every component of this course rewards.
