Analysing A Writer's Use Of Language

Bayani Gaba-gaba

One question on Paper 1 is worth more marks than almost any other single task in the whole reading paper, and it is the one most students get wrong. It asks you to explain how a writer uses language to create effect. Weaker answers just point at a metaphor and say it is 'effective' or 'paints a picture'. Stronger answers do something quite different: they take a precise phrase, explain exactly what it means, and then show what it makes the reader feel or see. That gap, between spotting a feature and analysing its effect, is the gap between the middle bands and the top of the mark scheme.

This lesson teaches you the chain that top answers follow every time: quotation, technique, precise effect, reader response. You will see weak comments rebuilt into strong ones, study a fully annotated model paragraph that shows the chain in action phrase by phrase, and practise on a real-style writer's effects task with a model answer and the actual mark-scheme bands. Master this one skill and you lift your reading mark more than any other single thing you can learn.

Manufura

  1. Demonstrate understanding of how writers achieve their effects and influence readers.
  2. Select powerful or unusual words and phrases and analyse their effect.
  3. Write a precise analytical comment that links a language choice to its effect on the reader.

Takardar Darasi

Analysing a writer's use of language is reading objective R4: working out how a writer's language choices shape the reader's response. On Paper 1 it is tested most heavily inside Question 3, the short-answer and language task worth 20 marks, all of them reading marks. The writer's effects analysis is the level-marked R4 work within that question. There you choose three examples of words or phrases from each of two named paragraphs, including imagery, and explain how the language works. The same skill earns marks in the shorter attitude sub-questions of Question 3 and feeds your own writing too: once you can see how a strong writer controls a reader, you can do it yourself. This is the single highest value reading skill in the course, so it deserves real practice.
