The Relative Importance Of Different Economic Sectors And The Location Of Economic Activity Varies Spatially, And Changes Over Time

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Two hundred years ago almost everybody on Earth worked the land. Today around four fifths of British workers are in offices, shops, hospitals and schools, while roughly two in five Indian workers are still farming. The same country, followed across time, walks the same path. That regular pattern is one of the most reliable relationships in human geography.

In this lesson you will learn to classify jobs into four economic sectors, read the Clark Fisher model that describes how the balance between them shifts as a country develops, and explain why particular activities settle where they do. You will also see why those location factors do not stay still, which is why the map of industry keeps being redrawn.

Manufura

  1. Classification of employment by economic sector (primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary) and the reasons for the differences in the employment structures in countries at different levels of development (Clark Fisher Model)
  2. Factors affecting the location of economic activity in each economic sector and how these factors can change over time
  3. Reasons for the changes in the numbers of people employed in each economic sector, including the availability of raw materials, globalisation, mechanisation, demographic changes and government policies

Takardar Darasi

A coalfield town in northern England in 1911 and the same town in 2026 sit on identical geology, yet almost nobody there now works underground. The coal did not vanish; the reasons for mining it in that place did. Understanding economic activity means understanding both where activities are and why the answer keeps changing.
