Migration And Urbanisation

Bayani Gaba-gaba

People have always moved, but never on today's scale. UN DESA estimated about 304 million international migrants in 2024, roughly 3.7 per cent of humanity, while UNHCR reported a record 123.2 million people forcibly displaced by conflict and persecution at the end of 2024, around one in every 67 people on Earth. At the same time the world has crossed a historic line: by World Bank figures, about 57.7 per cent of people lived in towns and cities in 2024, up from roughly a third in 1950, and the UN projects close to 70 per cent by 2050.

Migration and urbanisation are two sides of one global story about where people live and why they move. This note shows you how to separate refugees from economic migrants, how to weigh personal, national and global views, how to argue genuinely two-sided debates such as whether migration helps host countries, and how to reason toward courses of action you could defend in a report or team project.

Manufura

  1. Explain why migration and urbanisation is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on migration and urbanisation, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to migration and urbanisation, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on migration and urbanisation, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Takardar Darasi

Migration is people moving to live in a new place; urbanisation is the rising share of people living in towns and cities. They are linked, because much migration is from countryside to city, and both reshape economies, cultures and politics across borders. The numbers are large and current. UN DESA put the number of international migrants at about 304 million in 2024, around 3.7 per cent of the world's people. UNHCR's Global Trends reported about 123.2 million people forcibly displaced at the end of 2024, the highest on record, of whom most were displaced inside their own countries. More than a third came from just four countries: Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine.
