Fashion Design

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Fashion design is the one area of textiles where the material has to work on a moving, breathing, three-dimensional object that disagrees with it. A garment is made from flat cloth and worn on a body full of curves, and everything difficult about the discipline comes from that mismatch: darts, seams, ease, drape and grain are all answers to the question of how to make something flat wrap something round and still let it move.

This note works from the body outwards. You will cover the block and the toile, how a dart can be moved anywhere without changing the fit, why grain and bias decide how a garment hangs, how a design reaches a real person through sizing and specification, and what sustainable and ethical practice looks like as a decision you can evidence rather than a sentence you write at the end.

Manufura

  1. Design and create clothing and fashion for creative and commercial audiences, clients and consumers
  2. Use a range of fashion design techniques, materials and tools such as pattern cutting, adornment, accessories and illustration on fabrics and garments with consideration of sustainable materials, recycling and ethical manufacture

Takardar Darasi

The specification asks for the design and creation of clothing and fashion for creative and commercial audiences, clients and consumers, and for a range of techniques including pattern cutting, adornment, accessories and illustration on fabrics and garments, with consideration of sustainable materials, recycling and ethical manufacture. Two things in that wording matter. First, it says clients and consumers, so a garment has an intended wearer and the wearer is part of the brief. Second, it puts pattern cutting first, because in fashion the cutting is the design. A silhouette is not drawn onto a garment: it is produced by where the seams go.

  1. A dart can be moved to a different position on a bodice front without changing the fit because: A) The cloth stretches to compensate B) It removes the same wedge of cloth wherever it is placed around the fullest point C) The seam allowance absorbs the difference D) Darts do not affect fit at all Answer: B
  2. A toile is made in order to: A) Practise sewing techniques B) Test and correct the pattern in cheap cloth before cutting the final fabric C) Show the client the finished colour D) Calculate the cost of the garment Answer: B
  3. Diagonal drag lines radiating from the bust point in a fitted bodice indicate that: A) The side seams are too loose B) More shaping or length is needed over the bust C) The hem is uneven D) The cloth was cut on the bias Answer: B
  4. Negative ease means the garment measurement is: A) Larger than the body measurement B) Equal to the body measurement C) Smaller than the body measurement, so stretch holds it in place D) Measured without seam allowance Answer: C
  5. A one-way print increases the amount of cloth needed because: A) The print is more expensive per metre B) Pattern pieces cannot be nested head to toe and must all face the same way C) One-way prints are only sold in narrow widths D) It requires larger seam allowances Answer: B
