Rural Environments Are Natural Ecosystems That Are Exploited By Human Activities

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Every meal you have eaten began in a rural environment. Behind the shelf label sits a biome with its own climate, soils and vegetation, and a farming system that has reshaped that biome to produce food. This topic asks you to hold both pictures at once: the natural ecosystem, and the human system layered on top of it.

You will map the world's major biomes and learn what makes each one distinctive, sort the goods and services ecosystems provide into categories examiners recognise, and classify farming systems along three axes: arable or pastoral, commercial or subsistence, intensive or extensive. By the end you should be able to look at any farm in any country and place it accurately on all three.

Manufura

  1. Distributions and characteristics of the world's biomes (tropical, temperate and boreal forests, tropical and temperate grasslands, deserts and tundra)
  2. Examples of goods and services provided for people by natural ecosystems (timber, tourism, food, energy, water resources, health services, natural protection, and climate regulation)
  3. How humans use, modify and change ecosystems and rural environments to obtain food through farming systems (arable/pastoral, commercial/subsistence, intensive/extensive)

Takardar Darasi

A rural landscape looks like scenery until you learn to read it. The boreal forest of Siberia, the wheat prairie of Kansas and a half-hectare rice plot in Bangladesh are all rural, yet they run on completely different climates, soils and economics. Geographers start with the natural system, the biome, and then ask what humans have taken from it and what they have put in its place.
