Descriptive Writing

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Descriptive writing is one of the two composition choices on Paper 2 Section B, and it is worth a full 40 marks. Its job is not to tell a story but to paint a place, a moment or a person so vividly that the reader can see, hear and feel it. The best descriptions are made of precise, closely observed detail and a controlling atmosphere, not general scenery and not a chain of events. The single most common way candidates lose marks here is to drift into narrative; this lesson shows you how to stay in description and make it sing.

You will learn how the 40 marks split (16 for content and structure, 24 for style and accuracy), how to choose specific over stereotyped detail, how to build atmosphere through the senses, and how to give a description shape instead of a list. You will see flat sentences rewritten into vivid ones, a fully annotated model paragraph, and a complete worked task with a model response.

Manufura

  1. Express what is observed, thought, felt and imagined in vivid description.
  2. Create atmosphere and a clear sense of place through precise detail and imagery.
  3. Structure a description so it has shape and direction rather than a list of details.

Takardar Darasi

On Paper 2 Section B you choose ONE composition: descriptive or narrative. Either is worth 40 marks, and 24 of those marks, well over half, are for style and accuracy, with the other 16 for content and structure. That balance tells you what description is really testing: the quality of your writing itself, the precision of your words, the variety and control of your sentences, and the atmosphere you build. Description is the choice that most rewards a writer who can notice a thing exactly and put it on the page exactly. It is also the choice that most punishes a writer who slips into telling a story instead of painting a scene.
