Paragraphing, Structure And Cohesion

Bayani Gaba-gaba

A reader should never feel lost. Good paragraphing and clear structure are how you guide them: each paragraph deals with one idea, the ideas follow in a sensible order, and small linking words show how each step connects to the last. When this works, the writing feels effortless to read. When it does not, even strong ideas feel jumbled, and the marks for organisation slip away.

This lesson teaches you to control the shape of a whole piece, not just a sentence. You will learn when to start a new paragraph, how a topic sentence steers a paragraph, and how cohesion, the invisible glue of discourse markers and careful reference, keeps a reader moving smoothly from one idea to the next. You will study a reordered paragraph, an annotated exemplar and a reference table of linking words you can use straight away.

Manufura

  1. Organise writing into well-judged paragraphs with clear topic focus.
  2. Use cohesive devices and discourse markers to link ideas and guide the reader.
  3. Shape a whole piece so it has a clear beginning, development and ending.

Takardar Darasi

Structure is assessed directly. Writing objective W2 asks you to organise and structure ideas for deliberate effect, and the higher writing bands in both papers reward work that is shaped with care to guide the reader and ordered in a sensible sequence. Examiners note that the strongest responses reorder their material into a sensible, logical progression, while weaker ones simply follow the order of the source text or jump about. Paragraphing and cohesion are also what make a directed-writing task read like a real article, letter or speech rather than a list. Control the structure and you make every other strength in your writing easier for the examiner to see and reward.
