Social, Cultural And Literary Context In Prose

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Every novel you study was written by somebody, inside a society with rules about who may speak, who may marry, who may lead and who may be ignored. It was also written inside a library: a tradition of other books it borrows from, argues with or refuses to imitate. And the moment it left the writer's desk it began a second life, read by strangers in other countries and other decades who found in it things the writer never planned.

This note is about those three pressures: the social and cultural codes a text grows out of, the literary movement or genre it belongs to, and the changing reception that has followed it since publication. Handled well, context is not a paragraph you bolt on at the end. It is the reason a character's small decision carries weight, and it is where the highest AO4 marks in Component 1 are actually won.

Manufura

  1. Understand social and cultural contexts including attitudes in society and expectations of different cultural groups
  2. Understand the literary context of the text including literary movements or genres
  3. Understand how texts are received and engaged with by different audiences at different times

Takardar Darasi

Ask most students what context means and they will describe background: a date, a war, a depression, a place on a map. That is a start, but it is not what earns marks. Context earns marks when you can show it acting on the text. A society has expectations, and those expectations press on characters, limit their choices, supply their vocabulary, and shape what the writer can assume a reader already believes. When you can name the pressure and then trace it into a specific decision on the page, you are doing AO4.
