Oxides

Oxygen reacts with almost every element to form an oxide, but those oxides do not all behave the same way. Some turn water acidic, others make it alkaline, and a few can do either. Sorting oxides by how they react with acids and bases reveals a neat pattern that follows the periodic table.

In this lesson you will learn to classify oxides as acidic or basic and link this to whether the element is a metal or a non-metal. You will also meet amphoteric oxides, the in-between cases that react with both acids and bases, such as those of aluminium and zinc, and understand why they sit on that boundary.
