Product Analysis

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Pick up any manufactured object, a kettle, a stapler, a folding chair, and it is the result of hundreds of decisions: which material, which shape, which manufacturing process, how it will be used, repaired and eventually thrown away. Product analysis is the skill of reading those decisions backwards. By examining a real product critically you learn how designers and manufacturers think, and you build the judgement to make better decisions in your own designing.

This note teaches you to analyse real resistant-materials products against design criteria; to identify the scale of production a product was made at, from one-off prototypes to continuous production; to understand the quality assurance checks that run through manufacture; to follow the full life cycle of a product from design to disposal; and to explain planned and unplanned obsolescence and what they mean for sustainability.

Manufura

  1. analyse real-world products made from the materials named in 2.1
  2. understand the main scales of production are: - prototype or one-off production - batch production - mass production - continuous production
  3. understand that quality assurance checks are used throughout manufacture to ensure a product meets the customers’ expectations
  4. understand that products are: - designed - manufactured - used and maintained - disassembled and reused, recycled or disposed of at the end of their useful life
  5. understand that products may have a limited lifetime (planned obsolescence and unplanned obsolescence) and the impact on sustainability.

Takardar Darasi

To analyse a product is to take it apart in your mind and ask why every decision was made. A structured way to do this is to judge the product against a set of design criteria. A useful checklist for resistant-materials products is sometimes remembered as the questions of form, function, materials, manufacture, cost, ergonomics, aesthetics and sustainability. For each you ask not just 'what is it' but 'why was it chosen, and could it be better'.
