The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Bayani Gaba-gaba

From the radio signal that carries your favourite station to the gamma rays that sterilise surgical instruments, electromagnetic waves surround you every moment of every day. They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum, yet their wavelengths span from kilometres down to fractions of an atom, and that single difference determines whether a wave warms your dinner or lets a doctor see your bones.

In this lesson you will learn the seven regions of the electromagnetic spectrum in order, discover how frequency, wavelength and energy are linked, and explore the practical uses and biological dangers of each type of radiation. These ideas appear on both Paper 1 and Paper 2 of the Edexcel IGCSE.

Manufura

  1. Know that light is part of a continuous electromagnetic spectrum that includes radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray and gamma ray radiations, and that all these waves travel at the same speed in free space
  2. Know the order of the electromagnetic spectrum in terms of decreasing wavelength and increasing frequency, including the colours of the visible spectrum
  3. Explain some of the uses of electromagnetic radiations, including radio waves for broadcasting and communications, microwaves for cooking and satellite transmissions, infrared for heaters and night vision equipment, visible light for optical fibres and photography, ultraviolet for fluorescent lamps, x-rays for observing internal structure of objects, and gamma rays for sterilising food and medical equipment
  4. Explain the detrimental effects of excessive exposure of the human body to electromagnetic waves, including microwaves causing internal heating, infrared causing skin burns, ultraviolet causing damage to surface cells and blindness, and gamma rays causing cancer and mutation, and describe simple protective measures against the risks

Takardar Darasi

Hold a TV remote and press a button: nothing visible comes out, yet the television responds. Point a thermal camera at a crowd and every person glows brightly. Tune a radio and music appears from thin air. All of these rely on electromagnetic waves that your eyes cannot detect. Visible light is just one narrow slice of a far wider family, and understanding that family is essential to modern physics, medicine and communication.
