The second is messier: eleven drawings of the same corner of a kitchen made at different times of day, three of them crossed out, a strip of charcoal tests on grey paper, and a note in the margin that says the fourth one lost the light because the paper was too white. The second book will be marked higher, and the reason is worth understanding properly.
Research and development in Fine Art is not a folder of reference material collected before the real work starts. It is the work: looking at first hand, drawing to find out rather than to finish, testing one material against another with a question in mind, and leaving the evidence of your thinking where a examiner can see it. This note takes you through what that looks like on paper, including the artist study that gets misunderstood more often than any other part of the course.
