Development, Trade And Aid

Bayani Gaba-gaba

Why are some countries rich and others poor, and what, if anything, do the wealthy owe the rest? Development, trade and aid sit at the heart of that question. Development is about more than money: it is about health, education and the chance to lead a decent life. Trade is the engine many countries hope will lift them, and aid is the help offered when trade and growth are not enough. In Global Perspectives you are not asked to memorise economics; you are asked to weigh how this looks to a person, to a country and to the whole world, to test the evidence on each side, and to reason toward fair, workable action.

This note shows you how. You will meet the core facts stated with their sources and years, the three perspectives set side by side, the big debates (does aid actually work? is free trade fair?) laid out as argument and counter-argument so you stay balanced, and report and team-project ideas you could really use. The worked examples model the skills the exam rewards: spotting a perspective, evaluating a claim, framing a sharp question and building a line of reasoning.

Manufura

  1. Explain why development, trade and aid is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on development, trade and aid, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to development, trade and aid, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on development, trade and aid, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Takardar Darasi

Development, trade and aid matter to Global Perspectives because the gap between rich and poor countries is one of the defining features of our world, and because the three are tightly linked. How a country trades shapes whether it develops; whether it develops shapes whether it still needs aid. The decisions are not only national: trade rules, debt and aid budgets are set partly by international bodies and by powerful governments far from the countries affected. That makes it fertile ground for a GP report or team project, because almost every angle involves more than one perspective and a genuine debate.
