A common mistake is confusing excretion with egestion. Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste (carbon dioxide from respiration, urea from the breakdown of amino acids). Many are single-celled.

Prokaryotic organisms

Bacteria are the prokaryotes you need to know. Their cells are much smaller than eukaryotic cells and lack a true nucleus. Instead, the genetic material (a single loop of DNA) floats freely in the cytoplasm. Some bacteria also have small rings of DNA called plasmids. Bacterial cells have a cell wall, but it is not made of cellulose (as in plants) or chitin (as in fungi). Some bacteria are useful (for example, those in the gut that help digest food), while others are pathogens that cause disease.

Viruses

Viruses are not classified as living organisms because they do not carry out any of the life processes on their own. They are much smaller than bacteria and consist of a protein coat surrounding a core of genetic material (DNA or RNA). Viruses can only reproduce inside a living host cell, taking over the cell's machinery to make copies of themselves. Examples of diseases caused by viruses include influenza and tobacco mosaic disease.

The concept of pathogens

The specification asks you to understand the term pathogen and know that pathogens may include fungi, bacteria, protoctists or viruses. A pathogen is any organism (or, in the case of viruses, any agent) that causes disease. Not all bacteria are pathogens, and not all fungi are pathogens, but some members of each group are. Being precise about this in your answers matters. If the exam asks "What is a pathogen?" the answer is: an organism that causes disease. If it then asks for an example, name a specific organism and the disease it causes.

Exam tip: When a question asks you to compare groups of organisms, set up a small table in your answer with features down the left side and groups across the top. This makes it much easier for the examiner to see your points, and it forces you to cover every feature systematically rather than writing in prose and accidentally leaving something out.
