Coastlines are among the most dynamic environments on Earth, shaped by the constant interplay of waves, weathering and human intervention. The coastal environments section of the Edexcel IGCSE Geography specification is one of the most heavily examined areas on Paper 1.
The IGCSE 4GE1 coastal environments section covers three areas: the physical processes that create coastal landforms, the distinctive ecosystems that develop along different coastlines, and the strategies used to manage coastal environments sustainably. Marine processes
Waves are the primary agent of coastal change. They are generated by wind blowing over the surface of the sea, and their energy depends on wind speed, wind duration and fetch (the distance of open water over which the wind blows). You need to distinguish between two types:

Coastal erosion occurs through four processes: hydraulic action (the force of waves compressing air into cracks in the rock, causing it to shatter), abrasion (sediment hurled against the cliff face by waves), attrition (rock fragments colliding and becoming smaller and rounder) and solution (chemical dissolving of soluble rock such as chalk or limestone).
Weathering also acts on the coast. Mechanical weathering includes freeze-thaw action (water enters cracks, freezes, expands and breaks the rock apart). Chemical weathering involves acidic rainwater dissolving minerals in the rock. Biological weathering occurs when plant roots grow into cracks or burrowing organisms weaken the structure. Mass movement - including sliding (a block of rock slips along a flat plane) and slumping (saturated material rotates and slumps downward) - delivers weathered material to the shore, where waves remove it.
Longshore drift
Longshore drift is the process by which sediment is transported along the coast. Waves approach the shore at an angle determined by the prevailing wind. The swash carries sediment up the beach at this angle, while the backwash pulls it straight back down under gravity. The result is a zigzag movement of sediment along the shoreline. This process is central to understanding depositional landforms such as spits and bars, and it also explains why groynes are built at right angles to the coast to trap sediment and prevent beach erosion.
Erosional landforms
The Edexcel IGCSE Geography coastal environments content requires you to explain how erosion creates a sequence of distinctive features. The progression from headland to stack is a classic exam question:
- Headlands and bays: Where the coast is made of alternating bands of resistant and less resistant rock, differential erosion creates headlands (the harder rock that juts out) and bays (indentations where softer rock has been eroded faster). Along the Dorset coast in England, Portland limestone forms headlands while clays form bays.
- Cliffs and wave-cut platforms: Waves undercut the base of a cliff through hydraulic action and abrasion, creating a wave-cut notch. The rock above becomes unsupported and collapses. Repeated cycles cause the cliff to retreat, leaving a gently sloping wave-cut platform exposed at low tide.
- Caves, arches, stacks and stumps: Waves attack lines of weakness (joints or faults) in a headland. Erosion enlarges a crack into a cave. If the cave is eroded through the headland, an arch forms. When the roof of the arch collapses, an isolated stack remains. Further erosion reduces the stack to a stump. Old Harry Rocks on the Dorset coast illustrate this entire sequence.
Depositional landforms
Where wave energy decreases or sediment supply is high, deposition creates its own set of landforms:
- Beaches: Accumulations of sand, shingle or pebbles deposited by constructive waves. Sandy beaches tend to be wide and gently sloping; shingle beaches are steeper.
- Spits: A spit is a finger of deposited sediment extending from the coastline across a river mouth or bay. Longshore drift carries sediment past a change in the direction of the coastline, and deposition continues into the calmer water beyond. The end of the spit often curves due to wave refraction. Spurn Point on the Humber estuary in England is a well-known example. The Curonian Spit in Lithuania and Russia provides a striking European case.
- Bars: If a spit grows across the entire mouth of a bay, it becomes a bar. The enclosed body of water behind the bar forms a lagoon. Slapton Ley in Devon is a bar with a freshwater lagoon behind it.
Coastal ecosystems
The specification requires knowledge of four coastal ecosystems and their global distributions: coral reefs, mangroves, sand dunes and salt marshes. You also need detailed abiotic and biotic characteristics of one named ecosystem.

These ecosystems are threatened by human activities including industrialisation, agricultural runoff, tourism and deforestation. Coral bleaching driven by rising sea temperatures is one of the most significant large-scale threats. At a local level, trampling of sand dunes by tourists can destroy the marram grass that stabilises them, leading to blowouts and erosion.
Coastal management
Coastal environments Edexcel IGCSE questions on management test your understanding of the conflicts between different users of the coast (developers, conservationists, residents, tourists) and the strategies used to protect it. Strategies fall into three categories:
Hard engineering involves building permanent structures:
- Sea walls - concrete barriers that reflect wave energy (expensive, effective but can cause scour at the base)
- Groynes - wooden or rock barriers built at right angles to the shore to trap sediment (effective locally, but starve beaches further along the coast)
- Revetments - sloped structures that absorb wave energy
- Gabions - wire cages filled with rock, placed at the cliff base
- Riprap (rock armour) - large boulders placed along the shore to absorb wave energy
Soft engineering works with natural processes:
- Beach replenishment (nourishment) - adding sand or shingle to rebuild an eroded beach
- Cliff regrading - reducing the angle of a cliff to make it more stable
- Ecosystem rehabilitation and revegetation - replanting mangroves or dune grasses to provide natural protection
- Managed retreat (coastal realignment) - allowing the sea to flood low-value land, creating new salt marshes that absorb wave energy
Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) divide the coast into management units, each with a policy: hold the line, advance the line, managed retreat, or no active intervention.
You need case studies of coastal management in a developed country and a developing or emerging country. The Holderness coast in Yorkshire, England, one of the fastest-eroding coastlines in Europe, is a strong developed-country example where groynes at Mappleton protect the village but accelerate erosion further south. The Maldives, where rising sea levels threaten an entire island nation, provides a compelling developing-country case where hard engineering is unaffordable at scale and managed retreat may mean relocation to other countries entirely.
Fieldwork connections
Paper 1 may test fieldwork related to coastal investigation. Relevant techniques include measuring beach profiles (using ranging poles and a clinometer to record angle changes along a transect), recording sediment size and shape (using a ruler and Powers roundness chart), and studying longshore drift (marking pebbles and tracking their movement over time). Be prepared to explain your sampling strategy, present results using annotated diagrams or field sketches, and evaluate how reliable your data is.
Common mistakes
- Confusing erosional and depositional features. A wave-cut platform is erosional; a spit is depositional. If the question asks "explain how this landform was formed by deposition," do not describe erosion.
- Describing longshore drift without the zigzag. The swash goes up at an angle; the backwash comes straight back down. That zigzag is the mechanism. Simply saying "waves move sediment along the coast" does not show understanding.
- Weak case study answers. "A country built sea walls" earns almost nothing. Name the place, name the strategy, and explain both the benefit and any negative side effects.
- Ignoring the question's command word. "Describe" and "explain" require different responses. Describing the formation of a stack means stating what happens in sequence. Explaining it means stating why each step occurs, linking to the processes of erosion.
